Posted in my classroom are the following four expectations which encompass those that I have for my students. As a class, we will discuss these four points in detail and practice demonstrating all four of them throughout this year!
Math:
Everyday Math is the curriculum we will be using this year. With that, students will be responsible for completing math homework each night, as part of the Everyday Math lessons that are taught daily. In addition, we have a goal for all third grade students to know their basic math facts by memory (addition, subtraction, and multiplication), therefore practicing these facts at home, in addition to our practice at school, is expected to meet this goal. Using flashcards is a great option and I have also included a website under the helpful resources page which is also a good tool.
Basic Facts Goal for Third Graders at PV:
Addition at least 95/100 in 6 minutes
Subtraction at least 95/100 in 6 minutes
Multiplication at least 95/100 in 8 minutes
English/Language Arts:
During the school day, shared reading, guided reading, read to self, and teacher read aloud will be incorporated each day. Additionally, I expect students to read at least 20-30 minutes per night (or 100 min per week) at home with a book that is at their level. I will also encourage them to enjoy reading to a younger sibling/family member which is a great opportunity to practice their fluency skills. Students will also be engaging in daily writing lessons and writing opportunities. We will focus on building a writing community within our class and exploring the writing process.
Spelling:
In third grade, students complete individualized weekly spelling tests. Aside from you giving practice tests to your child, I have attached several documents under the "helpful resources" tab which provide fun ways students can practice spelling words. At this time, I will not require any spelling homework to be turned in; however I do expect students to practice spelling words in order to be successful on Friday's post test. We will begin spelling in early September.
Social Studies:
Our third grade Social Studies curriculum is called Social Studies Alive which focuses on communities both near and far.
Planners:
Each student will be given a planner that they are required to use each day. Students will record their daily homework responsibilities and any other important information to inform those at home. With that, I do ask that at home they show an adult their planner, discuss their homework responsibilities, and that they receive a parent signature each night. Please also look for your student's "take home folder" which they will be responsible for bringing home, emptying, and returning daily.
